Towards the end of Michael Jackson’s memorial service, his daughter spoke these words, “Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father I could imagine. I just want to say I love him so much.”
Those words spoke volumes to me. They were a reminder that Michael Jackson wasn’t just an item in the news, a musician, etc…he was someone that had people in his life who loved him for who he was; someone the rest of us never knew and will never know.
Putting Michael Jackson aside, her words were also a reminder that no matter what anyone thinks they know about you, there’s always someone who truly knows and loves the real you. These are the people in all of our lives with whom we can be our most vulnerable selves. People who want nothing more from us than our love and company.
It is my hope that everyone is blessed with someone who truly knows them because in the end the memories we leave with them will be the legacy we leave behind.
the title of this post reminds of a line from a Bette Midler song. Cheesy, I know.
“…in the end, you are my One True Friend.”
