Dear Diary Series
Date: Sunday May 22, 1983
Age: 12
Home: Holladay, Utah
The president of the United States is Ronald Reagan. One of our problems today is high inflation. We are also troubled by high unemployment [sic] another problem that concerns many people is that of nuclear warfare.
So I’m at a loss for words reading this entry. It doesn’t even seem real to me because I don’t remember EVER thinking about politics as a child. The entry prior to that is from March 30, 1983 so there’s no context. Was I a Young Republican? Did Alex P. Keaton have a hold on me? I’m talking about freaking Ronald Reagan, even if in such a matter of fact way. I must have copied that from somewhere. Right?!?
I know the way to solve many problems is to learn to keep the commandments of my Heavenly Father. I have learned from the Book of Mormon that when Heavenly Father’s children obey him, that they prosper. I have also learned that when his children disobey him they feel sad, feel frustrated, and very unhappy.
What the hell? Oops, I mean, wow! I mean, I was a very smart child, but English was still a relatively new language to me at the age of 12. Where did I get this? I’m both scared of this child and impressed by her.

I know I need to listen to the prophet of his church.
President Kimball has said:
- read the scriptures.
- say our prayers.
- write in our journals
- Be honest.
- Obey the commandments.
President Kimball was President Spencer W. Kimball, the 12th president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints or Mormons.
These were definitely my most formative Mormon days. We’d been in Utah since the previous fall, and church was part of everything because almost everyone around us was also Mormon.
Talk about a bygone era!
Thirty-four years sure changes a person! I am now agnostic and so far left politically that democrats are annoyed by me.
