The Sun Rose

The sun rose yesterday without you here.
As if it didn’t know you were gone.
Maybe it hadn’t been told.
So I shed my tears to let it know.

Through tear blurred eyes
I watched out my window
thinking all would be still,
but then I heard the wind blow.
I heard laughter, I heard life.
I thought how could this be,
how could life go on
without stopping to wonder where you went.
Then, in the midst of my tears,
the sun set yesterday without you here.

The sun rose today without you here.
I went to work, a busy day and a few more tears.
Again, life went on without stopping so I could miss you
and figure out how to live without seeing you,
without laughing with you, without you in my life.
and as I wondered, the sun set today without you here.

The sun will rise tomorrow without you here,
and I hope that it will help me understand
that life has its reasons for doing what it does.
As I cherish the friendship we shared and
recall my memories of you,
the sun will set tomorrow without you here.

Dedicated to my dear friend and second mother.
I know wherever she is, she’s sneaking a cigarette and cussing like a sailor 🙂
