A few weeks ago a friend of mine posted a facebook status challenging us to post an “I am thankful for…” status everyday until Thanksgiving. Having kept a gratitude journal for a time some years ago, I was up for the challenge. During the time of the challenge I said thanks for things from the somewhat shallow “my wash-n-wear curls that keep me from having to use a flatiron in the heat” to the deeper “the bad days because through them we learn an learn-again the important lessons of life. We learn to recognize the good,we learn the importance of gratitude, we are reminded to be humble, and we realize just how strong we really are.”
After posting the challenge on my own status some of my friends joined me and I believe that together we helped each other to see the wonders of life that we often take for granted. Today I’m thankful for what I call the facebook gratitude experiment, there were many days when digging deep for something to be grateful for helped to change my perspective.
As Melodie Beattie said, “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…. It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
